How to Become a Fashion Buyer

Fashion buying positions are quite coveted and highly sought after by fashion industry hopefuls. The industry is populated by people just dying to get into the select buying spots available. However there are ways to get into the fashion buying business without waiting for someone to die. Follow some steps to help you become a fashion buyer and learn to fulfill your career objectives efficiently.

1. Research various fashion merchandising programs at various colleges and art schools around the country. Write down your top five choices and the requirements for admission. Some of the more elite schools are easier to gain admission with a bachelors degree.

2. Assess your ability to spot trends and evaluate your own fashion sense, and be reasonable about your abilities and aptitudes. Start your applications for various fashion merchandising programs. Bear in mind the higher degree you receive, the more marketable you will become in the industry.

3. Look for internships at boutiques or major department stores, usually these can be set up through your college. Land an internship at a major department store if possible. Some programs like Neiman Marcus have specialized internships for fashion merchandising hopefuls.

4. Successfully complete your academic program and begin applying for jobs at various shops and boutiques, or inquire about permanent positions from your internship. Network to other buyers and stay current on industry news and job openings.

5. Land an executive training program that will basically secure your employment after completing the program. However, these programs are highly competitive so you must be marketable. Ensure that you have a strong resume and a good list of references before applying for buyers jobs or training programs.
