With the wide availability of new GPS technology, you don't have to spend an arm and a leg for a newer model handheld system. Used handheld GPS systems are becoming more widely available as more people purchase the newer items on the market. If you are looking to get a GPS system of your own but want to keep some money in your pocket, here are some things you can do to get your hands on one.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set a budget. If you are in the market for a used handheld GPS system, chances are you are looking to save your money so budget setting is crucial. Start with an exact number for how much you want to spend as well as how much you can spend realistically. This will keep you from losing money on
    your new GPS system.

  2. Step 2

Read customer reviews. Once you have a good idea of what's on the market start looking for customer reviews on the products you've found. This will keep you from buying a model that might be cheap but stop working its first time out or lose its ability to track your location in a sticky situation.

  3. Step 3

Find a few models that you like. Have a checklist for the criteria you would like your used handheld GPS system to have, and find a few models that meet your needs. Narrow your list of possibilities by comparing customer reviews to the price of the models you're looking for.

  4. Step 4

Bargain hunt. Now that you have a list of possibilities, using the Internet and local refurbished products retailers, find your perfect GPS system. Use auction sites as a guide to price, but purchase via online auctions with caution. Refurbished items sometimes will come with factory warantees depending on who you purchase your items through, so consider carefully the source of your purchase.
