There are many reasons why individuals are not able to file their taxes in a timely fashion. For some it is procrastination, for others it's because the "dog ate their homework," and for some it is because they are out of the country. If you fall into the last category, you will need to fill out tax extension Form 2350 to get extra time to file your returns.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Confirm that you are qualified to use Form 2350. The proper name for the form is "Application for Extension of Time To File U.S. Income Tax Return, For U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad Who Expect To Qualify for Special Tax Treatment. If you have not traveled abroad throughout the current tax year, you may not use this form.
Step2
Obtain a copy of Form 2350. This form is available from the Internal Revenue Service website (see below).
Step3
Complete the identifying information. You must provide your name, address and social security number. If you are filing jointly, be sure to include your spouse's social security information.
Step4
Tell the government how much time you will need to complete your taxes.
Step5
Indicate whether or not this is your first extension. Tell them if you will need more time to allocate moving expenses.
Step6
Provide information about your living status. Explain when you first arrived in the foreign country, the period of time you were there, your foreign address and estimated date when you expect to return to the US.
Step7
Enter the amount of income tax you are paying with the form. You must enclose the amount due. Form 2350 does not provide an extension of time to pay your taxes; it provides an extension of time to file your return.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to sign the form. If you are filing jointly, be sure to include both signatures.
