Step 1
Document your expenses. When you attend a professional seminar, be sure to document all of your expenses. Expenses include but are not limited to the price of the seminar, transportation and meals.
-
Step 2
Keep an expense diary. In the diary be sure to record the date you attended the professional seminar, the subject, and all costs relating to it. In the event the Internal Revenue Service decides to audit your taxes, you will be able to provide accurate documentation.
-
Step 3
Organize your receipts. Create a filing system whereby you can organize all of your receipts. It will save a lot of time, frustration and heartache if the IRS audits you. There is nothing worse than thumbing through an envelope full of crumpled receipts in an attempt to find proof of a valid tax expense.

Step 4
Track your mileage. Create a mileage log. The log should contain the date, number of miles driven and reason for the trip. Get into the habit of adding entries to the log every time you attend a professional seminar.
