From Quick Guide: Youth Organizations
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the Big Brothers Big Sisters website (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Enter your zip code in the "find my local agency" field provided on the website. This will get you connected with a chapter of BBBS in your area.

  3. Step 3

Complete the online application to become a Big Sister. You will need to provide two references and be prepared for an interview and background check.

  4. Step 4

Discover what interests you have in common with the children that are in need of a Big Sister. Being a woman, you will be paired with a girl between the ages of 6 and 18 who has interests that are similar to yours.

  5. Step 5

Be prepared to spend time with the child you are paired with. Most Bigs, as the adults are called, spend only about an hour a week with their Littles, which is what the child is referred to as. You can go to the library, go on a bike ride or just walk around town with your Little.

  6. Step 6

Enjoy your time with the child you are mentoring.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't have access to the Internet, Big Brothers Big Sisters is listed in the phone book. Calling their hot line will get you connected to an agency in your local area.
  • Make the time with your Little about quality, not quantity. BBBS will provide vouchers for local events to you so there is little, if any, out of pocket expense for you.
  • Don't make a habit of canceling or not showing up for your time with your Little.
