How to be a Humble Prom Queen

Being prom queen is certainly a dream for many a teenage girl. For a very lucky few, that dream actually becomes reality. While receiving that coveted crown, it is important to remember to accept it with gratitude, civility and grace. Most of all, you want your classmates to feel that you truly deserve the honor that has been bestowed upon you. Here is how to be a humble prom queen.

1. Never assume that the title is in the bag. Nobody likes a smug person who goes around telling everyone that she is a shoo-in for prom queen. Not only is it likely to cost you some votes, it will just make you look like a jerk if someone else receives the honor.

2. Be as friendly as possible with the other girls who are vying for the title. The idea is to come off as a good sport and an honest contender when you receive the crown. You should fight all urges to be catty toward your competition.

3. Earn your title. Prove to the entire student body that you are worthy of becoming prom queen. This means being friendly toward all walks of student life, not just the popular kids. Champions of the underdog often receive special consideration.

4. Congratulate and compliment all prom queen contestants on the big night. Again, it is important not to appear jealous toward your contenders. Do your best to be honest, not condescending. Remember, most people can see right through false kindness.

5. Don't make any assumptions before your name is actually announced. It wouldn't do for you to puff out your chest and start walking toward the stage before the prom queen is even named.

6. Act surprised when your name is called. It doesn't matter if you've known in your heart of hearts that you would be prom queen. Anything short of surprise and delight will come across as smug, and nobody likes a smug prom queen.

7. Show your gratitude. Be sure to thank everyone who made this distinguished honor possible. Thank the students for choosing you, and be honest in your thankfulness.
