Listen to jazz music of all kinds to familiarize yourself with the jazz style. Try different forms and styles of jazz to get you acquainted with how varied the style can be if you are not already aware.

Begin by learning a healthy dose of music theory. Sign up for a music theory class at a learning institution or try taking private lessons from a jazz musician or friend who knows theory and jazz music well.

Practice your normal traditional scales everyday and the new jazz scales that you learn through studying theory. Try to broaden the range with which you can play on your instrument. Most jazz trumpeters typically have an exceedingly high range.
Step4
Learn proper articulation and technique, since these skills will lay the foundation for your jazz music. Work with a knowledgeable teacher and play sessions with a band of people that will allow you to practice your jazz skills.
Step5
Play with other musicians as much as possible and learn to listen to the music, feel the flow of the music and try to integrate your new jazz knowledge into your playing. Practice as much as possible and listen to other musicians as much as possible to help fine tune your jazz skills.
