Alterations are a time consuming yet necessary part of buying your prom dress. You want it to be perfect. Hiring a skilled tailor or seamstress will make a world of difference in how the dress fits. You'll feel more confident and comfortable. Follow these steps to get perfect prom dress alterations.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy a dress that fits as well as possible. It will be difficult to alter it if it's too tight. If it's way too loose, you may lose some of the structure and character of the dress with drastic alterations.

  2. Step 2

Ask the dress or bridal shop if they offer alterations. Many employ seamstresses to handle it. If not, ask for a recommendation. You can also look in the phone book under "Tailor."

  3. Step 3

Make an appointment for alterations as early as possible. The seamstress or tailor will need at least two weeks to alter your dress. They may need more if they're slammed with proms and weddings.

  4. Step 4

Bring your shoes and undergarments with you. The dress will fit differently once your heels and pantyhose are on. Wearing everything will ensure the seamstress gets the alterations perfect.

  5. Step 5

Try on the dress and allow the seamstress to locate problem areas. Walk in it to make sure it's the correct length.

  6. Step 6

Get the dollar amount quoted in writing before you let the tailor do any work. You don't want to run into unexpected charges.

  7. Step 7

Pick up your dress in time. Allow a few days before the event in case it needs further alterations.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask to see a sample of her work before letting the seamstress touch your dress.
  • Take a picture of the dress before you leave it, in case it comes back damaged.
  • Tell the seamstress if any part of the dress is uncomfortable or digging into your skin.
