Step 1
Choose a solid, dark-color skirt. A dark color allows the eye of the beholder to follow the natural shape of the A-line. The eye does not become lost in the intricacies of a patterned fabric. It is not distracted by bulges otherwise accentuated by lighter colors.
-
Step 2
Hem the A-line at mid knee or below. Use length to balance width. The wider the waist, the longer the skirt length should be. This gives the illusion of a smaller waistline.
-
Step 3
Match the blouse. The eye of the beholder moves from head to toe. It stops at the waist if there is a change in fabric color or pattern. For a waist-slimming effect, choose a solid blouse the same color as the A-line skirt.
-
Step 4
Tuck in the blouse. Doing so gives the upper body a V-shape. This balances the hips and enhances the waist-slimming effect of the A-line.
-
Step 5
Add an extra-wide belt. It has a narrowing effect on a wide waist. A belt gathers the material above and below it, producing an hourglass look. Choose a belt color that blends well with the color of the A-line skirt and blouse.
