Prom is an exciting and stressful time for teens and parents. Most parents remember to discuss things like drinking and curfew, but you may not remember to discuss how your kids are to treat the chaperons at prom and after prom events. Take a few minutes to discuss the behavior expectations you have for your child.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Discuss prom with your teenager. Be sure you and your teen both understand the expectations you each have for prom. This discussion should include all aspects of your teen's behavior such as drinking and curfews. and attending after prom events.

  2. Step 2

Ask your teen what they envision the role of chaperon at the prom will be. Ask what they think the chaperons will do. Make sure your teen has a realistic understanding of what is involved in chaperoning prom and after prom.

  3. Step 3

Remind your teen that your expectations are that all adults will be treated with honesty and respect. Whether the chaperons are adults your teen is familiar or friendly with, or whether they are strangers, all chaperons are to be treated with dignity and respect.

  4. Step 4

Let your teen know that they have avenues to express themselves should problems with a chaperon come up. Help them develop a plan of action to solve issues by going to another chaperon or calling home for advice to help avoid conflict.

  5. Step 5

Finalize the rules regarding your teens behavior toward chaperons and explain that regardless of how the teen may feel, chaperons are to be treated as if the parents were there to witness the exchange. Your teen will have a better experience if they understand the rules before such an important event as prom.
