How to Create a Horse Tail Wrap

A horse tail wrap is used to protect the hair from breakage, keep the tail clean and can even be used to condition the hair. Many tack supply stores sell horse tail wraps, but they tend to be expensive and unnecessary. You can create a horse tail wrap of your own that will last up to four weeks with just an old bed sheet.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Scissors
  • Old bed sheet
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Rubber band

Step1
Cut off the hemmed edges of the bed sheet. Cutting lengthwise, cut three eight-inch wide strips from the sheet.
Step2
Shampoo your horse's tail and apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner. While the tail is still slightly damp, divide the hair into three equal portions just below the horse's tailbone. For ease of wrapping, keep the rubber band on your wrist and the strips of bed sheet over one shoulder.
Step3
Place one strip of bed sheet centered behind the left portion of your horse's tail. Wrap the edges of the sheet around the hair so that they completely surround the portion of tail. Hold the left piece securely in your left hand as you wrap the next strip around the middle portion. Again, hold both the left and middle portions securely as you wrap the final strip around the right portion of your horse's tail.
Step4
Braid the horse's tail, making sure that the first braid securely holds the sheets in place. As you go, wrap the strips of bed sheet fully around the portion of your horse's tail, twisting slightly to prevent gaps in the sheet.
Step5
Continue the braid to the end of the tail and secure the sheet strips with a rubber band. Cut of the excess sheeting. You can apply liquid conditioner to your horse's tail directly through the sheeting, or even add fly repellent to deter pesky insects from bothering your horse.
