Teaching your child her colors was fairly simple, but trying to teach her about how colors mix may be a bit more of a challenge. Even many adults don't know what colors to mix together to get purple or orange. This lesson can become easier once you know some fun ways to teach your child about mixing colors. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Eyedropper
  • Food coloring
  • Shaving cream
  1. Step 1

Decide what colors to start with. When you teach a child about mixing colors, you want to start off with the simple combinations first. Try yellow + blue = green first, for instance, before you try to teach him how to make brown or lime green.

  2. Step 2

Talk about it every day. Teaching a child anything gets easier the more you talk about it, so try to include conversations about mixing colors in your daily conversations.

  3. Step 3

Play with your food. Try mixing ketchup and mustard together to see what you get. Let kids play with their food, and they quickly learn how to mix colors to create all sorts of new colors. You can add food coloring to white pasta sauces or dips, for color mixing food.

  4. Step 4

Mess around with shaving cream. A few drops of food coloring mixed with some shaving cream is a great medium to teach a child about colors. Set her in the bathtub and let her try out different color combinations. When she's done, simply rinse the tub and the child.

  5. Step 5

Try some water play. A tall water glass or bottle filled with water and food coloring is another fun way to teach a child about mixing colors. Let him use a eyedropper to add the right amount of drops to make the desired color.
