1. Check your budget first. Depending on the overall cost of the home, you'll have a certain amount of money allotted by your builder for options. Whatever you choose to buy, you must stay within the allotted amount or pay the difference out-of-pocket.

2. Ask questions about any options you're not clear on. Your builder should go over the list of options with you and help with your decisions. If you are working with a Realtor, he or she can help guide you through the process also.

3. Consider the wide range of possible options when you buy a new home. Options include such things as bay windows, upgraded appliances and light fixtures, jetted garden tubs or increasing the size of decks and patios. Adding a fireplace or finishing a bonus room can be other options.

4. Think about your lifestyle in addition to your budget when you buy new home options. Ask yourself if you will really use whatever extras you are about to pay for. Sometimes the excitement of buying a new home can temporarily cloud judgment. You don't want to waste money on what you won't use.

5. Make the decisions about what new home options to buy as a family, if applicable. If you have a spouse and children to consider, let everyone voice ideas.
