Wood floorings are beautiful alternatives to carpet and tile in the home. They are easy to clean and look nice. However, it is important to maintain wood floors properly. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure you've used a reputable installer to put in your hardwood floors. Follow any instructions they offer on how to maintain your wood floors.

  2. Step 2

Use a water-based cleanser once a week that is PH neutral if you have a new wood floor or a recently refinished wood floor. Water based cleaners that are PH neutral such Wood Wash work well. In addition, buy distilled water to mix with your cleanser to avoid hard water streaks on your wood floors.

  3. Step 3

Tap powder such as talcum powder to prevent squeaks.

  4. Step 4

Remove any solid material from the floor like dirt and hair with a broom or a vacuum designed for hardwood floors before cleaning them.

  5. Step 5

Wax floors every few months that don't have a polyurethane finish. If your wood has a polyurethane finish, check with your installer to see how you should polish your floors.

  6. Step 6

Try to keep high heels and grit off the floors to prevent scratching. Never drag heavy furniture across wood floors and try to prevent children from dropping heavy things onto the wood. If possible, use area rugs to maintain your wood floors.

  7. Step 7

Use window coverings to prevent the sun from bleaching a portion of your flooring.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never allow liquids to sit on your wood floor as this could cause damage.
