Step 1
Start standing still. Begin the between-the-legs shot by standing a bit in front of the base line. Stand with feet wide apart, back to the net and a tennis ball in hand. Drop the ball, letting it bounce once. Raise your forehand shot up so the racket is at a 90-degree angle to your chest. You can use a Continental grip to enhance the snapping motion of the shot.
-
Step 2
Hit at shin level. After the ball bounces and returns to about shin level, bring the racket down to hit the ball. As you do so, turn your left foot outwards (if you're right-handed; if you're left-handed turn your right foot) so that your legs spread a bit wider and your base is more steady. Square the racket as you strike the ball, using your wrist to snap it.
-
Step 3
Follow through. As you make contact with the ball, allow your foot on the same side as your racket hand to pivot inwards. The result is that both your feet will be facing the same direction, giving you power from the movement of your hips. After you hit the ball between your legs, follow through with either a slight low-to-high motion or a quick upward snap to produce a lob.

Step 4
Start moving with the shot. To integrate the between-the-legs shot into your game start doing drills in which your partner lobs the ball over your head. Run to the ball and as it's bouncing set yourself up to hit the shot correctly. Begin slowly, aiming only to make contact with the ball. Focus on getting the ball over the net and then placed strategically as you improve the shot.
