Every citizen can be patriotic. To be an American and to be patriotic means something different to everyone. Not all Americans are patriotic, and you can be patriotic to other things besides America. However, there are certain things that all Americans that are patriotic practice and by reading on you can find out how to be patriotic.

Register to vote. Older Americans fought very hard to get the voting age lowered to 18, since this is the age that boys were drafted at. Voting is a sign of being patriotic. You are helping to select not just the people who will be running the country, but also the laws of the country.

Petition your congressional representatives. If it weren't for Americans taking this seriously the voting age would never have been lowered. We would also not have an all-volunteer army today. Showing signs of patriotism is more than just waving a flag.

Support the changes that you feel will improve America for all. To show your patriotism you need to know the laws of the country, support the ones that you feel are important and change the ones that you feel can be improved or are not fair to everyone.

Sign up for one of the armed services. Being patriotic means defending your country. You may be called upon to defend it verbally or by actually fighting for it in war. Showing your support doesn't mean that you support war but that you support your country.

Be prepared to support the soldiers who are fighting for their country. This is extremely important when showing your patriotism. If it wasn't for the soldiers fighting in other countries, they would be fighting here. Sending mail and packages can go a long way to soldiers that are away from home.

Celebrate the holidays that make this country what it is today--4th of July, Veterans Day, and Memorial Day are a few of these. Show your patriotism by understanding the days and celebrating them in the appropriate style. However, the best way to show patriotism is by living it every day.
