Sugar gliders make wonderful pets. However, determining the sex of a sugar glider can be a bit difficult-especially if you own a sugar glider that has yet to fully mature. Follow these simple steps to determine if your pet sugar glider is a male or a female.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Inspect your pet sugar glider's head. Check for a small, diamond-shaped spot on the head. Verify that the spot is bald. If the sugar glider has these features on his head, there is a good chance that your pet sugar glider is male.

  2. Step 2

Turn your sugar glider over so that its belly is exposed. Hold your sugar glider securely but soothingly. You want to make your sugar glider feel comfortable while you are inspecting its anatomy.

  3. Step 3

Stretch the skin around your sugar glider's abdomen very gently. If your sugar glider has a small pouch, it is female. This pouch will be approximately half an inch big and look like a tiny opening or dimple in the sugar glider's skin.

  4. Step 4

Look for a small, furry bump located further down the abdomen as an indication that the sugar glider is male. In a fully relaxed position, the male's bump will hang approximately half an inch away from its body.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider having a male pet sugar glider neutered. Neutered males have more moderate scents than those that have not been neutered.
  • Female sugar gliders mature a little earlier than males.
  • Check federal and state breeding laws before deciding to breed multiple pairs of sugar gliders.
