Purchase isopropyl rubbing alcohol. This can be bought at your local drug or grocery store. The brand of the alcohol is of no concern to this process.

Pour some of the alcohol onto a cotton ball. Rub the cotton ball thoroughly all over the leather belt. You may need to use more than one cotton ball if the first one becomes mangled. Repeat this process two more times to ensure the alcohol has soaked into the leather.

Use Vaseline to rub onto the belt as well. This product can be purchased at most grocery stores and drug stores. This process is best done by using your fingers. Make sure you rub the entire belt with the Vaseline. You will not have to repeat this process. By performing this step, the leather is not only loosened, but it is also softened.

Use the same technique as mentioned before on all your other leather products. Shoes, belts, purses and wallets can all receive the same treatment and will all be loosened and softened by the above process. This process will also protect your shoes from water damage as well.

Works well as described, even with the alcohol odor, however do NOT try to improve on the method by enclosing the article in a plastic bag and setting it in the sun as I did. The alcohol needs to evaporate completely and all I suceeded in doing was to cook my leather and dry it our further where the alcohol had accumlulated!

Well elixia, "overwhelming odor"? From rubbing alcohol? Goodness dear, please don't walk by a tannery: it will kill you! Ah, how about doing the alcohol thing out of doors? Or is it too cold out there or something? Me I would use something a bit more sophisticated than petroleum jelly: but any good product leaves a residue.... which you wipe down after it penetrates. -

You neglect to mention the overwhelming odor of rubbing alcohol this creates, and the fact that your apartment will reek like a hospital while it is drying, and that it will smell like this even when it is not wet any longer - I give this solution a thumbs-down! I haven't tried the Vaseline step, but that sounds like a sure way to ruin clothes if it rubs off...
