How to Remove Stealth Viruses

Stealth viruses are a special problem for computers. They're designed to hide on disks so virus scanners won't detect them, making them more difficult to remove. You must take steps to block stealth viruses from hiding so your scanner can find and remove them.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure your anti-virus software is updated. It must be able to detect the most recent viruses to completely clean your system. Your software should be programmed to scan for updates.

    • 2

Save a copy of your virus scanner onto a clean floppy disk. This backup file will be needed if the scanner on your hard drive is infected.

    • 3

Insert the floppy disk into the drive in a locked position. This should block a virus from hiding within the floppy drive.

    • 4

Check the system for viruses using your anti-virus software. If the clean, locked floppy is in the drive, you should be able to detect and remove a stealth virus.

    • 5

Check if your scanner program is infected. If it is, use the backup program on the floppy to scan for viruses.

    • 6

Shut down the system completely to clear the memory and reboot. With the virus out of memory, your computer should be safe.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to scan all files before opening them onto your computer. Do not share files among friends or download software from sources you don't know. These are the best ways to prevent acquiring viruses, including stealth viruses.

  • Some viruses, like Monkey, must be in memory in order to mount the infected drive. If your virus scanner is updated, it should be able to remove these viruses.
