Wingback chairs are beautiful pieces of furniture. But when the frame is damaged, not many people recognize that they have the option to make repairs rather than replacing a favorite and comfy chair. While it can be a time consuming process, your handy work can provide a tremendous amount of personal satisfaction.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Toothpicks
  • Wood glue
  • Wood chisel to remove dried glue
  • L Brackets
  • Plates
  • Screwdriver
  • Scissors
  • Staple gun
  • Staples
  • Upholstery padding
  • Upholstery batting
  • Upholstery fabric
  1. Step 1

Remove the upholstery and padding to expose the portion of the wingback chair frame that needs to be repaired. Pay attention to how the upholstery is attached to help you repair the upholstery after you repair the frame. This would be the time to consider new upholstery for your furniture.

  2. Step 2

Review the extent of the damage to the frame. Replace any stripped or broken screws. You can add toothpicks to the screw holes to make the screws sit snugly in place.

  3. Step 3

Fix loose joints by removing all dried glue. Apply fresh glue and reinsert the joint. Consider bracing the frame with "L" brackets to strengthen the joints, if needed.

  4. Step 4

Replace any rotted wood by removing the bad section and installing new wood. Screw plates to secure the new section to the old section of the chair. Remember most repairs will not be visible in a wing chair, they will be covered with upholstery.

  5. Step 5

Return the wingback chair to it's original condition by replacing the padding, the batting and the upholstery. Soon you'll be enjoying a favorite piece of furniture knowing that it's frame is secure once again.
