So you've decided to kick your fishing up a notch and catch the ultimate predator, a shark. Well you certainly can't go catch Jaws with some light weight hook for mackerel; you need hooks specifically for sharks. Here are some tips on how to buy hooks for sharks.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Define what kind of sharks you are fishing on your trip. A Sand Shark is different to a Great White shark. Check what kinds of sharks are analogous to your region and what depth they frequently live. The more specific you are, the better selection you can make when it comes to hooks. For instance for Blue Sharks, "Mustard 3407 12/0" hooks are prime. Get a little more aggressive and go after Makos and you are looking at several "Mustard 10/0-12/0 7331" hooks on one rig. Go to bluefinlures.com for a comprehensive guide on what size you need for the shark you are going to catch.

  2. Step 2

Visit online stores. Once you've made your decision about what kind of shark you are fishing for, the best deals can be found on the web. Stores like basspro.com, westmarine.com, and even eBay are great places to look.

  3. Step 3

Swing by your local tackle and bait shop. This is best for the novice fisherman who could use a little guidance from the pros. Since these are specific to your area, place "shark hooks" and your town name in your favorite search engine. Then call the shop ahead of time to make sure they have shark hooks for fishing in stock.

  4. Step 4

Peruse tag sales and community auction boards. Spots like craigslist.com have become all the rage. If you are going to be fishing for sharks, you are going to need more than just hooks. The rods must be sturdy, the reels must have at least 100 yards of line and leaders are also helpful. The point being if someone has invested the money in shark hooks, they probably have the rest of the equipment as well. Chances are you can score a great deal.

  5. Step 5

Fish with lures for sharks. At blueoceantackle.com they recommend a variety of lures from the "Ballydown," "Mako Madness," "Leader Rigs," "Drift Rigs," and the monster of all monsters the "Tooth Fairy." That bad boy has three different hooks, is 19 inches overall, with a leader cable able to hold close to 500 lbs. Give them a call at (760) 948-8003, tell them what you are fishing for and let them guide you to the right size and style.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to have a gaff hook on board to help pull the shark into the boat. A gaff hook is a large hook, which is attached a large rod, usually at least 6 to 8 ft.
