Step 1
Refer to the owner's manual or the manufacturer's recommendations for a boat cover for your model boat. You may be able to order this directly from your local boat dealer or marine supply retailer.
-
Step 2
Measure your boat from top to bottom and side to side before ordering the boat cover, even if your owner's manual or manufacturer recommends a specific boat cover. You want to make sure that the boat cover will actually fit your boat.
-
Step 3
Consider where your boat will be when the cover is on. If your boat is going to be stored in an open dock area that is exposed to wind, rain, cold and other weather elements, you are going to want a very sturdy, securely fitted boat cover made from a durable material, such as a vinyl, acrylic or polyguard. If your boat is going to be in a climate controlled storage facility or a covered garage, your boat will probably be okay with a less expensive boat cover made of cotton or canvas type materials.
-
Step 4
Make sure that the boat cover you plan to buy comes with instructions. It is a good idea to visit a boat dealer and have the sales person show you how the boat cover goes on and off the boat. This will give you a good idea if this is a cover that you are going to be able to put on your boat easily. If not, keep shopping to find a style of boat cover that will work for you.
-
Step 5
Visit boat shows in your area to see many displays of boat covers. In many cases, you can buy your cover at the boat show or order it at that time.
-
Step 6
Ask about the warranty on the boat cover. Many times the boat cover can be very expensive and you want to make clear as to what the warranty of the boat cover is. Keep all your receipts and warranty information in the event that you have to return the boat cover or if it is defective.
