How to Turn Down a Dare

One popular game is "truth or dare" where you must reveal something about yourself or take the dare. Peer pressure can certainly mount the minute someone "dares" you to do something and all eyes are on you. But just because they dared you doesn't mean you have to do it. Here are some tips on how to turn down a dare.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask for another dare. Instead of flatly turning them down and seeming like a heel who won't participate in the game, ask them for a different kind of dare. Of course, this is a double-edged sword because the next dare you get could be even more treacherous than the first.

    • 2

Tell the people what you will or will not do. This is a way of negotiating yourself out of something you don't want to do, but aligning yourself with something that you're a little more comfortable with doing. For instance, you won't eat bugs because they may be infested with disease, but you will put ice cubes down your shorts for three minutes.

    • 3

Reveal a truth. If you seem to be losing the "dare" battle, offer to reveal a truth about yourself that no one knows. This of course works best in the "truth or dare" game. But even if you are not playing that game, by changing the subject you may suddenly interest the group in something even more titillating.

Just say no. At the end of the day, you have the power to walk away from any situation. Sure, your friends may ridicule you or call you a wimp. but if they were pushing you to do something truly dangerous, then they are not really friends at all.

Tips & Warnings

  • Utilize humor during the tense moments of the dare. Some well-placed humor always affords a disarming charm that can change the whole dynamic of the room. Crack a joke or change the subject to something funny. It just might get you out of your dare.
