How to Explain the Passover Exodus

The Exodus (when capitalized) refers to the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and is described in the Book of Exodus of the Bible. According to Jewish tradition, the Hebrews were enslaved in Egypt for 30 years before being led back to Israel by Moses and Aaron. It is the reason for the holiday of Passover and the following steps will explain the Exodus.

Instructions

    • 1

Describe the Exodus according to the Torah. Hebrews moved from Canaan into Egypt while Joseph was the vizier of Egypt. They spent 4 centuries in Egypt after Joseph died until a Pharaoh enslaved them for 30 years under harsh and oppressive conditions.

    • 2

Include Moses' role in the Exodus. Moses had been exiled from Egypt for murdering an Egyptian who tried to attack a Hebrew slave until God commanded him to free the Hebrews in Egypt. He failed to win their release from the Pharaoh, so God sent forth 10 plagues to Egypt.

    • 3

Elaborate on the specifics of each plague, especially the last one. This plague killed the firstborn sons of the Egyptians, causing the Pharaoh to finally relent.

    • 4

Discuss how the Pharaoh changed his mind and sent his army after the Hebrews to the Red Sea. Moses parted the Red Sea and the Israelites crossed safely, but the Egyptians were drowned by the returning waters as they tried to cross.

    • 5

Talk about how the Hebrews wandered in the desert for 40 years, stopping at a series of Stations before finally returning to Canaan.
