Buy a guide at the track. Study the odds, each horse's performance history and learn which conditions and distances each horse prefers.

Select one winner for each of four consecutive races. This is where it gets tricky, and also why the payout is significant if you can correctly pick these horses. Remember you are betting on the winner in each race, and the races must be consecutive.

Place your bet at the betting window or computer module. If it's your first time betting, speak with a teller at a window. Indicate that you want to play a pick 4, announce the size of the bet and name the races and the horses you believe will win. Your conversation would be something like, "I'd like a Pick 4 for $2, on races 3, 4, 5, and 6. Betting on the 7 horse, 2 horse, 1 horse and 4 horse to win." After you pay and your ticket is printed, make sure it is correct.
