1
Research the different brands of self-tanner available. Most of them come in different formulas that are designed for fair, medium or darker complexions. If you have very fair skin, you won't get a natural looking tan by using a self-tanner formulated for people with dark complexions, so stick with what's been created for your particular skin coloring.
-
2
Know that most brands gradually build a tan, which adds to the natural look of the tan. You may have to use it for 3 or 4 days before you really start to see a difference. Be patient, knowing your reward will be a more natural looking tan.

3
Exfoliate your skin with a non-oil based product. This will allow you to slough off any dead skin, and give the self-tanner a nice smooth surface to sink into. Be sure to dry off completely after showering before you apply self-tanner. These steps will ensure an even looking tan with no streaking.
-
4
Shave your legs before using self-tanner. If you wax your legs, do it several days beforehand; doing it after will remove some of the color.
-
5
Allow about 30 minutes to let the self-tanner dry completely before getting dressed. Doing it too soon may cause the skin to darken unevenly, looking unnatural, as your skin rubs some of the self-tanner off onto your clothes.

Tips & Warnings
Avoid swimming, working out or showering for at least 6 hours after you apply self tanner. Water or sweat can cause streaking, and prevent you from getting a natural tan using self-tanner.
