Going to prom should be a fun event for everyone. But, often couples or friends of the same sex have difficulty attending the prom together. If you plan on attending prom with a same sex date, here are a few things you should consider.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check with the administration. Depending on your school, you may not be able to buy a ticket for your date if he is the same sex as you. Even if you do get tickets, chaperons or school security may not let you into the prom if you arrive together. Once you know your administration's position or policy, you know what course of action may be required in order for you to take a date of the same sex.

  2. Step 2

Be prepared for conflict. Even if the administration doesn't have a problem, conflict may rear its ugly head. Evaluate the atmosphere of the school to determine how your classmates might react. Don't use the prom as your coming out experience; this only adds stress.

  3. Step 3

Limit public displays of affection. Dancing as a same sex couple can lead to open hostility from classmates. Open displays of affection, like kissing, may get you kicked out of prom.

  4. Step 4

Go as friends. You don't have to be gay or lesbian to go to prom with a same sex date. Going with a friend is more common for females who haven't gotten dates for the prom. You can arrange to have dinner, arrive together and leave together. In this situation, you shouldn't encounter the problems that gay or lesbian couples face.

  5. Step 5

Take care of the normal details. You need to buy tickets, get your prom attire and plan your evening. It may be necessary to decide who is going to pay for what.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's illegal for public and non-religious private schools to discriminate against same sex dating.
