How to Knit a Linked Stripe Stitch

The linked strip stitch creates triangles of color from one row into another using slipped stitches. This is a more complicated pattern not because it requires any extensive knitting knowledge but because the knitting pattern is quite long - sixteen rows. This pattern also needs to use two different colors of yarn so that the knitted pattern shows up in the fabric.

    Things You'll Need

    • Color A Yarn
    • Color B Yarn
    • Knitting Needles
      • 1

Cast on a multiple of 4 stitches for your project using color A yarn. Using a multiple of 4 means that any number of stitches that you cast on must be divisible by 4 so that the stitch pattern can be done evenly throughout each row.

      • 2

Knit all the stitches in row 1 and 2 using the color A yarn.

      • 3

Knit the first stitch in row 3 and then begin the stitch pattern of slipping 2 stitches, wrap the yarn in the back of the stitches, and knit 2 stitches. Repeat this pattern until you have 3 stitches left in the row and end the row by slipping 2 stitches, wrapping the yarn in the back and knitting the last stitch. In knitting shorthand row 3 is: k1, *sl2 wyib, k2*; rep ** until 3 stitches remain, end sl2 wyib, k1. Knit this row using the color A yarn.

      • 4

Change to your color B yarn and knit row 4 with the following pattern: purl the first stitch, then begin the stitch pattern of slipping 2 stitches, wrapping the yarn in the front, purling 2 stitches until 3 stitches remain and slip 2 stitches, wrap the yarn in front of the stitches and purl 1. In shorthand this is: p1, *sl2, wyif, p2*, repeat ** until three stitches remain, sl2, wyif, p1.

      • 5

Knit all the stitches in row 5 and 6 with the color A yarn.

      • 6

Knit row 7 exactly as you did row 3 with the color A yarn.

      • 7

Knit row 8 exactly as you did row 4 with the color B yarn.

      • 8

Knit all the stitches in rows 9 and 10 with the color B yarn.

      • 9

Knit row 11 exactly the same as rows 3 and 7 with the color A yarn.

      • 10

Knit row 12 exactly the same as rows 4 and 8 only this time using the color B yarn.

      • 11

Knit all the stitches in row 13 and 14 with the color B yarn.

      • 12

Knit row 15 exactly the same as you knit row 11 with the color A yarn.

      • 13

Knit row 16 exactly the same way you knit row 12 with the color A yarn.

      • 14

Repeat steps 2 through 13 until your project is the length that you want it then cast off all your stitches.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You don't have to use just two colors of yarn. As long as you combine two different combinations of colors in the sixteen row pattern, you can use as many colors as you want for this pattern.
