How to Gain Student's Respect as a Substitute Teacher

Substitute teaching is probably the hardest job in the field of education. Many substitute teachers cover all grades from kindergarten through high school. Often they do not know until the morning what they are teaching that day. Gaining respect is one of the most important things you must do as a substitute teacher.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Dress the part. Even if you are working in a school where teachers are allowed to dress casual you need to dress professionally as a substitute teacher. Jeans might work for the teacher who is a ten year veteran and has already earned the respect of the students but for a substitute teacher it won't. Wear a dress or dress pants and an appropriate top.
Step2
Relate to the students in an age appropriate manner. Making the switch from first grade on Monday to tenth grade on Tuesday can be challenging. But if you address your high school students like they are in first grade you will not earn their respect.
Step3
Show respect for your students. Use their names as much possible, this is easier to do if the class has assigned seats and you have a seating chart. Look them in the eye when speaking to them.
Step4
Let the class know what you expect from them and what the consequences will be if they do not conduct themselves as expected.
Step5
Tell them what they can expect from you. If possible let them know what the day's schedule will hold. With younger children it is helpful if you can let them know what time they can expect things such as lunch and recess.
Step6
Be consistent and follow through on things you say you will do. Treat all children fairly and do not show favoritism.
