Garbage bags are put to good use everyday to collect lawn debris, trash or to store blankets and sleeping bags, but they have many more uses than most people are aware of. Garbage bags can be used and reused in various ways around the home and garden, so keep some handy for use other than holding trash.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Prevent your windshield from freezing on cold winter days with a garbage bag. Defrosting your windshield can take a long time and wastes energy as you wait with your car heater blasting. Instead of waiting to defrost your windshield, tuck a garbage bag into the corners of your car doors and hold the edges down with your windshield wipers. The garbage bag will prevent ice from building up on your windshield.
Step2
Use garbage bags as emergency rain gear. Cut a holes in the top and sides of garbage bag for your head and arms for a quick rain poncho. You can use small garbage bags to protect a hat or tie a bag around your shoes to keep extra dry. In a pinch, you can even use a garbage bag poncho as an emergency apron, a great disposable trick for messy kids crafts.
Step3
Take some extra garbage bags camping and lay them out on the ground under your tent. The garbage bags will deter ground insects, stop excess moisture and dirt from entering your tent and will insulate the space between the ground and your sleeping bag to keep you warm at night.
Step4
Cut garbage bags into strips and use them as waterproof stuffing for your outdoor furniture. Garbage bags will last forever, dry more quickly than foam or other stuffing materials and will make for easy cleaning of your outdoor furniture.
Step5
Protect a cast or bandaged wound from the rain or while bathing. Wrap a cast or the bandaged area with a garbage bag. If necessary, use heavy duty tape to secure the bag and prevent water from seeping in through the edges.
