How to Drink at a Soirée

From the French word "soir" meaning evening, a soirée is a sophisticated late hour event that calls for food and drink fitting for the ambiance. Drinking at a soirée is an integral part of the occasion and sipping on that perfect beverage will add to the spirit of the evening.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Accept whatever is recommended by your host. Unless you are allergic or seriously dislike what is on offer, agree to whatever your host recommends. They may have given lots of thought to the drinks being served and you may appear rude and ungrateful if you refuse.
Step2
Check the ingredients that your drink contains. If there is punch bowl or mixed concoction, ensure there is nothing in the mixture that could cause an adverse reaction or any alcohol if you are driving or don't drink.
Step3
Choose a drink that fits in with the season. The soirée may have been thrown to commemorate a special event, so toast with a flute of champagne or sip on some mulled wine for the festive season. In the hot summer months, a fresh lemonade or chilled spritzer will cool you down.
Step4
Drink whatever compliments your food. Many dinner parties will have wine choices or cocktails directed towards the food that is being served. Choose a crisp white to have with your fish or a light sparkling beverage with dessert and avoid heavy drinks and strong flavors that may overpower your meal.
Step5
Have whatever you decide in moderation. Nobody likes a sloppy drunk and you will only wake up with a hangover and possibly some regrets. Even if your drink choices don't contain alcohol, too much will leave you running to the bathroom every 5 minutes so take your time with each beverage and space out your drinks over the evening.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only drink alcohol if you have a designated driver or place to crash.
  • Don't drink heavy beverages such as dark ales or blended drinks before eating.
