Cashier jobs allow you to work in a fast environment, interact with people and make some money. So many different stores and companies have cashiers, that you can probably find a job in a business that suits you. If you like landscaping, be a cashier at a nursery. If you want to go into business management, look for a cashier job at a grocery store. If clothes are your passion, work at a boutique.

Things You'll Need:

  • Determination
  • Customer service knowledge or experience
  • Patience
  1. Step 1

Start asking around early in the season. Everyone looks for a summer job as school gets out, so you need to beat them to the punch. If you don't know where you should look, make a list of all the retailers you like to shop at and start from there. The mall is also a great place to scope out a lot of retail jobs at once.

  2. Step 2

Gather your work history, qualifications and references together so you're prepared when handed an application.

  3. Step 3

Stop by stores and ask to speak to the manager. Ask her if he or she plans to add staff in the summer. Express your interest in working there and make sure you have a working knowledge of the retail industry and the specific store you are trying to get a position at. Visit the company website to get an idea of the products they sell and their target audience.

  4. Step 4

Fill out an application. Be as complete and concise as possible. Personally hand it back to the manager if she's available and thank her for the opportunity.

  5. Step 5

Look online for a cashier position. Many companies have job pages on their websites where they post new listings. Ask friends and family members if they can refer you for a position - sometimes this is perhaps the best way of getting your foot in the door.

  6. Step 6

Follow up with a phone call or in person visit. This will show that you really care about the job.

  7. Step 7

Set up an interview with a manager. During that meeting, convey the skills that make you a strong candidate for the job. Talk about your ability to work under pressure, be organized and be friendly to customers. Talk about your work ethic, too.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dress nicely for your interview and be on time.
  • Send a thank you note to the manager following the interview.
  • Being a cashier is a fast paced and a sometimes stressful position. Be ready to deal with customer complaints, long lines and hours.
