How to Get a Filing Extension for Taxpayers Out of the Country
American citizens, no matter where they reside, are subject to filing and paying their taxes by the tax deadline date. If you are out of the country, you are not excused from filing and paying your taxes. If you need extra time, you can file for an extension.

1
Access the right form for your situation. To file a tax extension while you're out of the country, get Form 2350, the "Application for Extension of Time To File U.S. Income Tax Return For U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad Who Expect to Qualify for Special Tax Treatment."
-
2
Download a copy of the form from the IRS website. The extension for out of the country taxpayers is usually for 30 days. However, if you have to allocate moving expenses, you may be granted an additional 60 days for a total extension of 90 days.

Tips & Warnings
An extension to file your tax returns is not an extension to pay the taxes you owe. All outstanding taxes are due by the tax deadline date. Failure to pay results in a late-filing penalty and interest charges accruing until you pay the outstanding amount.
