If you can't assemble all of your tax documentation in time to file your taxes by the April 15th deadline, you should file a tax return extension. Here's how to it electronically.

From Quick Guide: Filing Your Taxes
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Obtain IRS Form 4868. "Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return" is available for download from the IRS website.

  2. Step 2

Complete Form 4868 to use as a worksheet. You won't have to mail it to the IRS.

  3. Step 3

Submit Form 4868 electronically through your tax preparation software. If you don't have one of the popular tax software preparation packages, you can still file tax return extension form electronically by using a free e-file service. To find a free service, go to the IRS website and enter "Free File" in the search box at the upper right hand corner of the page.

  4. Step 4

Pay the amount owed via credit card or by funds transfer over the phone. Filing a tax return extension electronically doesn't mean that you have additional time to pay the taxes owed. You must pay the taxes by the April 15th tax due date. You can pay over the internet by using one of the IRS approved service providers or you can pay by phone. Visit the IRS website for more information on the approved service providers.
