If your regular exercise routine is not helping you shed those unwanted pounds, you may be going about things the wrong way. Although exercise is supposed to be beneficial to your overall health, there are things you may be doing to sabotage your workout. Read these steps and learn how to avoid common exercise mistakes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stay focused when you exercise. Although pedaling a stationary bicycle or walking on the treadmill may not be the most exciting workout, resist the urge to flip through a magazine while you exercise. You'll burn more calories if you focus your energy on working your muscles.

  2. Step 2

Assume the correct posture while exercising with fitness equipment. Make sure that the seat of a stationary bicycle is adjusted properly so that your body is not hunched over or your legs cramped. If you are using an unfamiliar machine, ask an experienced person to show you the proper technique, to prevent injury.

  3. Step 3

Slow down if you want to maximize the benefits of your exercise routine. Instead of rushing through exercises, visualize how they are helping your body to become strong, lean and muscular.

  4. Step 4

Implement a fitness plan and set specific goals. To prevent boredom, introduce new activities into your exercise routine.

  5. Step 5

Pick up a pair of weights and strengthen your muscles while losing fat. If you are a woman afraid of becoming too bulky, there is no need to worry. A woman's low amount of testosterone makes it nearly impossible to achieve the same look as a man. The benefit of lifting weights is gaining lean tissue mass.
