How to Decorate a Classroom for St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day provides an opportunity to teach children about the culture and people of Ireland and the history of Saint Patrick. Decorate your classroom for St. Patrick's' Day and involve your students in the activity.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang a map of Ireland on the classroom wall. Turn this St. Patrick's Day decoration into a lesson by showing students where they live in proximity to Ireland. Ask any students of Irish ancestry to find out where their families originally came from and have them show the class on the map.

    • 2

Instruct students to use colored pencils, crayons or markers to draw a rainbow, with a pot of gold and a leprechaun at the end of it. Use these colorful decorations to line the inside of your classroom door.

    • 3

Cut out the outline of a shamrock from firm cardboard paper, and then have students trace the outline onto green construction paper. Give them safety scissors, and have them cut out the green shamrocks to hang on the walls, bulletin boards and windows.

    • 4

Purchase a few shamrock plants from your local florist a few weeks prior to St. Patrick's Day. Bring them to your classroom, and set them around the room. Ask students to take care of the plants by watering them.

    • 5

Buy or create your own classroom calendar bulletin board set for St. Patrick's Day. Hang up rainbows, shamrocks, leprechauns, Irish harps and the Irish flag, along with the calendar days of the month.

    • 6

Write on the board using only green chalk on St. Patrick's Day.
