Depo-Provera is a shot that is given to a woman to protect against pregnancy. It is one of the most maintenance free forms of birth control with a high rate of effectiveness. With Depo-Provera, you stop ovulation and reduce the likelihood of having a period.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Set up an appointment with your gynecologist. The Depo-Provera shot is not available over-the-counter.

  2. Step 2

    Discuss your birth control options. Let the doctor know that you are interested in Depo-Provera and find out if the birth control shot is the best choice for you.

  3. Step 3

    Get the first shot in the doctor's office. The doctor or nurse will give you the first dose of Depo-Provera during the first 5 days of your period. You are immediately protected after receiving the shot.

  4. Step 4

    Set up a schedule to get repeat Depo-Provera shots. You need to receive the shot four times during the year for complete year-round protection. The shots are going to be scheduled every 11 to 13 weeks.

  5. Step 5

    Stop Depo-Provera within the year that you wish to get pregnant. Most women do not have a problem getting pregnant after Depo-Provera.
