Donating blood is a wonderful gift you can give someone, especially if you have a rare blood type. Many people don't donate blood due to the side effects of dizziness and nausea. However, there some things you can do to ease nausea during blood donation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Drink plenty of fluids before donating to prevent dehydration. Avoid alcohol the night before and try to avoid caffeine beverages before donating.

  2. Step 2

Eat a meal before donating blood. Make sure you had a good dinner the night before and a healthy meal on the day. This can help keep your blood sugar from dropping too low, causing dizziness and nausea.

  3. Step 3

Let the staff know if you become nauseous during the procedure. They have things they can do to help you, including being ready to catch any vomit.

  4. Step 4

Avoid exercising immediately before donating blood.

  5. Step 5

Inquire whether you can watch a movie or listen to headphones during the donation process.

  6. Step 6

Ask for a glass of water to drink immediately after donating, eat the light snack the nurse will bring you (usually cookies) and relax for about 10 to 15 minutes after donating.

  7. Step 7

Do not watch the needle being inserted or watch the blood being collected if the sight of needles or blood makes you feel nauseous.

Tips & Warnings
  • Nausea, dizziness and fainting are unusual side effects if you're donating blood. Not everyone experiences them.
