How to Cure Tonsil Stones

Tonsil stones are small, odorous white balls in the back of the throat. They result from a combination of post nasal drip, trapped food particles, oral bacteria, and dead white blood cells. Although the only way to cure tonsilloliths is to have your tonsils removed, they are harmless. .

Instructions

    • 1

Remove dairy from your diet or limit its intake. Dairy food encourages the buildup of mucous and calcium, which are both elements of tonsilloliths.

    • 2

Avoid eating before bed. Food particles lying around your mouth while you're sleeping can accumulate in the tonsils.

    • 3

Brush your tongue regularly with a toothbrush.

    • 4

Use a tongue scraper after brushing your teeth. Stick your tongue out and get as far back as you can in order to remove accumulated bacteria that your toothbrush may have missed.

    • 5

Gargle with salt water or mouthwash for at least three minutes each day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask your ear, nose and throat specialist about laser resurfacing for a less painful alternative to tonsillectomies.

  • The only method for effectively curing tonsil stones is to have your tonsils removed altogether, as tonsilloliths get lodged in tonsil crypts.
