If you're looking for a family outing that's relatively cheap and doesn't involve sitting in a darkened room eating junk food, try the zoo. Zoos are great for all children, including teenagers. However, if you plan to take a teenager to the zoo, there are some things to keep in mind.

From Quick Guide: Visit the Zoo
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Don't let your teenager offend you. Your teenager may be embarrassed to be around you; this is normal teenage behavior. They may be embarrassed that someone from their school may see them. This may mean they'll scowl and grunt at you if you ask them questions. Don't worry, this behavior will disappear as they get older.

  2. Step 2

Give them something to do. Suggest they take pictures of the animals or enlist them in helping to reign in younger children.

  3. Step 3

Let them bring a friend, since they may enjoy the experience a little more if they have someone else their own age with them.

  4. Step 4

Allow them to go off on their own. If they have their own cell phone, this may be a good way to let them have the fun of the zoo without being embarrassed to be in your company. Have them check in periodically and consider meeting them in a specific location every hour or two to make sure they stay out of trouble.

  5. Step 5

Find out if your teenager can become a volunteer at the zoo. This is a great way to build up a college resume and get some great life experiences.

  6. Step 6

Do some research beforehand; most zoos have websites. Find out if there are any specific things at the zoo that cater to teenagers or anything specific your teenager might enjoy seeing.
