How to Find Cartoons to Teach Science

You're looking for fun ways to teach your students science. When you just can't get their attention by diagramming molecules on the blackboard anymore, turn to cartoons. Besides having a great time, the kids will be learning and retaining their lessons.

Instructions

    • 1

Read through the daily newspaper. Find funny or irreverent cartoons that you can use to illustrate a scientific concept. They don't have to be about science, as long as the kids can relate the cartoons to their lessons.

    • 2

Watch TV for ideas. Saturday morning is the best time to catch cartoons for youngsters, like "Looney Tunes," where violations of scientific laws regularly occur with hilarious consequences for the characters. For older students, "The Simpsons" provide plenty of funny material to lighten the mood in class (see Resources below).

    • 3

Network and exchange ideas with other teachers. When you find a funny science cartoon, let another teacher benefit from your good luck. Trading with other educators will assure a good selection for everyone.

    • 4

Find science cartoons on Internet Science websites. "Science Cartoons Plus" offers a cartoon gallery where you can choose from different areas of science to teach your students (see Resources below).

    • 5

Ask students to make their own cartoons depicting the current science lesson. You will find they remember the lesson better after they've chosen a humorous way to illustrate it for the class.
