Artists have captured the beauty of the nude human form in almost every conceivable medium, including photography. Whether shooting a nude with a film or digital camera, the process is very similar.

From Quick Guide: Photograph the Human Body
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Identify the model being photographed. Professional photographers obtain all necessary permits and releases before beginning any work. Have models sign a release that identifies her, documents her given age and confirms her desire to be photographed.

  2. Step 2

Set up the studio for the photo session. Prepare any furniture or props needed. Ensure that the studio is a clean and warm environment for the model. Many studios are cold so provide a heater to warm the air.

  3. Step 3

Make the model feel as comfortable as possible before, during and after the photo session. Nude photography asks much from the model and putting them at ease is a sign of a professional photographer.

  4. Step 4

Establish the lighting in the studio. Set up mono-lights and soft-boxes according to the desired scene. Although many photographers use strobe lights for nude photography, hot-lights are recommended simply for their warmth.

  5. Step 5

Configure the camera for nude photography. Shooting in manual mode delivers the best results, as all camera functions will be in control of the photographer. Find a happy medium between light and shutter speed. Use a higher shutter speed if the nude model will be in motion for the shot.

  6. Step 6

Position the model where he will be photographed. Direct the model to different poses and positions. Express direction verbally and avoid having to physically manipulate the model to prevent embarrassing situations.

Tips & Warnings
  • Understand the market for nude photography. Have a direction at the beginning of the session. Express to the model where the photo shoot is going and follow a natural progression.
  • Obtain all model releases and permissions before beginning the photo session to avoid future legal actions and establish a professional atmosphere.
