How to Improve Putting by Plumb Bobbing

Reading the break on the green when you're playing golf can be an impossible task. You must consider whether it is breaking or sloping and if the green is running fast or slow. By using your putter and your good eye, you can answer many of those questions. You can improve your putting by Plum Bobbing next time you play golf.

• Putter
• Golf ball
• Cup or target

1. Determine your dominant eye. Hold your index finger out in front of you so that it aligns with a specific point in the distance, such as a light switch. Close one eye and then the other. Whichever eye aligns your finger nearest to the point, in this case the light switch, that is your dominant eye.

2. Move a few steps behind your ball and position yourself so that you are in a direct line with the hole.

3. Hold your putter with your thumb and index finger down toward the end of your grip. Grasp it loosely using the arm opposite your dominant eye with the heel of the club facing directly away from you.

4. Align the center of your ball with the bottom of your club. Then allow your dominant eye to travel up the shaft until it is level, or even, with the hole.

5. Read the slope or break. If there does happen to be a slope, the hole will be on either side of the club shaft. This will tell you which way the ball will break as it travels.

6. Sink the putt. Assume your putting stance, block out the rest of the world and sink the putt for your well-deserved birdie.
