Many people believe that putting is the easiest part of golf. You're on the green, close to the cup and you only have to tap the ball in. What people fail to realize is that golf is a mental game and the green intimidates many golfers, especially the younger, more inexperienced competitors.

Things You'll Need:

  • Golf play set
  • Putter
  • Golf balls
  • Putt-putt course
  • Putting green
  1. Step 1

Buy a plastic golf bag, clubs and golf balls in a set for toddlers. At this age, toddlers like to imitate adults, so show them how you swing. Let the kids have fun with the toy and they'll pick up skills as they go along. Some play sets have little cups to practice putting.

  2. Step 2

Take kids to a putt-putt golf course. Putt-putts offer putters that younger golfers can easily hold. The course is fun and entirely focused on being able to judge the hole and putt. Make sure that kids are holding the putter with both hands.

  3. Step 3

Enroll them in golf school. Many local golf courses offer summer programs designed to teach kids how to putt. Depending on where you live, the program may be taught by a retired semi-professional or professional golfer. You can also hire a golf instructor.

  4. Step 4

Take a bucket of balls and putters and head to the green. Show younger golfers how to align the shot. A golfer must visualize the shot before he swings. Consider proper technique like evaluating the green, checking the wind and deciding the speed of the ball.

  5. Step 5

Teach younger golfers to putt cross-handed. Place the left hand on the grip of the putter. Put the left pinky on top of your right index finger. Pull the left shoulder, arm and hand back and swing like a pendulum. Focus on lining the ball up to the hole and getting the proper speed.
