How to Putt Left Hand Low

Putting is one of the toughest aspects of playing the game. You've driven the ball and chipped it to the green, and now you have just a few feet separating you from success or failure as you try to sink the ball to the bottom of the cup. Try putting cross-handed, which is also called putting Left Hand Low.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Putter
  • Golf ball
  • Cup or target

Step1
Grab the club with your right hand at the very top. (If you play left-handed simply reverse these instructions.) Allow your pinky to either wrap around the top of the club or hang off, whichever feels more comfortable.
Step2
Line up the putt with the hole. Just use your right hand and line up the putt as you normally would. Remember to keep the putter a normal distance from your midsection. It shouldn't feel too far from your body, or too close to your body.
Step3
Place your left hand down the shaft in front of your right hand. Interlock the pinky from your left hand with the index finger of your right hand.
Step4
Imagine your shoulders being square and stay on the shot. If you have properly aligned it, you are ready to strike the ball. The advantage to this grip is that with your arms locked in this position, your shoulders can't "pull out" in one direction or the other.
Step5
Putt the ball. Now it's time to clear your mind and just focus on sinking that ball in the bottom of the cup.

Tips & Warnings

  • This grip will certainly feel odd at first. But just keep practicing. Try utilizing it on short putts first (inside 12 feet), as that is where it is most effective.
