With the proper preparation and right attitude winter camping with your children can be a fun and educational experience. Two of the biggest benefits are now crowds and no bugs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Camping Gear
  • Warm Clothes
  • An Established Camp Site
  • Prepared Foods
  • Lots of Cocoa, Tea and Cup-A-Soup
  • Simple Games
  1. Step 1

Find a good prepared campsite with either a lean-to, an Adirondack shelter or a cabin. Many state and national parks have facilities like these. You can find all of the information you need and how to make reservations at state and national park service websites.

  2. Step 2

Choose a campsite that you can either drive to or is only a short hike. When packing your child’s pack, keep it as light as you can so that the trip in to camp is a little challenging but stays fun.

  3. Step 3

Prepare all of your food in advance. Include your children in choosing and preparing the food. This will get them excited for the camping trip and will ease the preparation of meals when you get your camp set up. If you own a vacuum sealer, bag and seal individual portions for each meal. This will make cooking at the campsite much quicker and simpler.

  4. Step 4

When you arrive at camp, make a game of getting camp set up. Who can gather the most wood for the fire? Who can organize the sleeping area? Who can set up the cooking area? Keep it simple and make it fun.

  5. Step 5

Once all of the campers are settled in, go explore. Find tracks on the ground or in the snow. See who can spot the most animals. Find interesting plants and mushrooms. Your imagination is your only limit.

  6. Step 6

Make a fire and boil water for hot food and drinks. It’s cold out. Your body needs energy. Eat and drink as much as you want.

  7. Step 7

Play cards. Play games. Tell stories. Settle in for the night, keep the fire stoked and do it all again the next day.
