Falafel is a tasty dish from the Middle East and Mediterranean region. It can be served inside pita bread for a sandwich or eaten alone with tahini sauce as a snack. If you're looking for a meat-free alternative for lunch or dinner, consider making falafel for a tasty and spicy treat. Here's how to make delicious falafel in just a few steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 can (16 oz.) chickpeas
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro
  • 1/4 cup fresh mint
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 3 scallions
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil, for frying
  1. Step 1

Prepare the scallions, cilantro, garlic and mint. Mix all ingredients on medium speed in a food processor. Set aside.

  2. Step 2

Drain the chickpeas. Drain the water from the can of chickpeas and rinse under cold water. Add to food processor.

  3. Step 3

Prepare falafel mixture. Add breadcrumbs, baking powder, cumin, salt, and chili powder to the chickpea mixture and mix on medium speed to form a thick batter. Falafel mixture will be the consistency of lumpy cake batter.

  4. Step 4

Prepare falafel balls. Use your hands to make small falafel patties, approximately 2 1/2 inches in width and 1/2 an inch thick. Set on lightly oiled plate.

  5. Step 5

Prepare oil for frying. Heat the oil in a medium frying pan then add patties to fry for approximately 4-5 minutes until they turn a light brown in color. Patties will be crispy.

  6. Step 6

Transfer patties to plate. Line a large plate with a paper towel and set patties on it after frying. This will absorb excess oil.

  7. Step 7

Serve with tahini sauce, or fill a pita pocket with falafel to make a sandwich. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Cut the fat by baking the falafel instead or using cooking spray instead of oil.
  • Serve falafel with a yogurt-cucumber sauce.
