Caramel sauce can be added to ice cream or your favorite dessert for instant indulgence and easily incorporated into other treats for a unique flavor. Homemade caramel sauce can be made with sugar, butter and condensed milk; it's perfect for pancakes and brunch as well, and you can add it to the breakfast table for a few smiles! Here's how to make a simple homemade caramel sauce.

From Quick Guide: Sauces
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup fresh butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • Medium saucepan
  1. Step 1

Prepare the sugar. Mix the sugar and condensed milk together in medium saucepan, and cook on medium heat until sugar is dissolved completely. Set aside.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the butter. Melt the butter in another small saucepan, and stir in the vanilla and milk. Leave to simmer on low heat until mixture is smooth, about 1 to 2 minutes.

  3. Step 3

Finish the caramel sauce. Slowly stir the butter mixture into the sugar mixture and leave to stand 3 to 5 minutes until mixture becomes thick.

  4. Step 4

Pour into bowl or small pitcher and cover. Store in refrigerator until ready to serve and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Sauce will thicken as it stands.
  • Heat the sauce in a microwave before serving.
  • Add more milk to make the sauce more pourable if needed.
  • Serve the sauce with fresh fruit wedges, on top of brownies or even as a topping for cheesecake!
  • Don't let the butter overcook or it will leave a 'burnt' taste.
  • Avoid using fat-free sweetened condensed milk as the flavor will be different.
