Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- 18-by-24 inch piece of 3/4 inch plywood
- 18-by-24 inch frameless art print, photo, or painting
- 2 16-by-1 inch pieces of 3/4-inch plywood
- 2 24-by-1 inch pieces of 3/4-inch plywood
- Wood screws
- Paint, stain or veneer
- Piano hinge
- 2 pairs of magnets
- nylon straps
- Circular saw
- Drill
- Glue
- Tape measure
- 220-grit sandpaper
Step1
If your piece of art has no backing, great. If it has a backing, carefully remove it now. Set it aside. The best choice for your art is something on canvas that wraps around the 3/4-inch backing on which it is mounted.
Step2
Sand all pieces of plywood.
Step3
Make an 18-by-24 inch box with the 1-inch strips of plywood.
Step4
Paint, stain or veneer the outside edges of all the plywood including (if necessary--see below) the backing of the print. Let dry.
Step5
Mount the art to the 18 inch by 24-inch piece of plywood using glue. Make certain that there are no wrinkles in the print. If possible, wrap the edges of the art around the edges of the plywood. Let dry.
Step6
Attach the piano hinge to the top of the bottom piece of the 18-by-24 inch box.
Step7
Attach the other side of the piano hinge to the bottom of the backing of the art. When the hinge is closed, both bottom edges should be even. And the hinge should allow the box and the backing to open up to a 90-degree angle.
Step8
Mount the box to the wall. Make sure you screw into the studs and not just the drywall.
Step9
Attach nylon straps to the wall studs near the top of the inside of the box. And attach the other end of the straps to the backing of the art.
Step10
Attach the magnets to the inside of the top of the box and match them up with the backing so that the backing and the box are flush.
Step11
Begin your career in espionage (just make sure you're working for the good guys).
