In 1944, Franklin Roosevelt signed into law the first “GI Bill” which provided education benefits to World War II veterans. Current military veterans still enjoy a version of this benefit, now called the Montgomery GI Bill. Applying for this benefit is a great way to pay for either traditional education or vocational education and licensing.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Select college or educational institution. Two ways exist to learn if a particular school takes the Montgomery GI Bill. You must either speak to the school’s financial aid department to ask if they take these benefits or go online to the Veteran’s Administration Website then do a search for your particular school.
Step2
Fill out an application. The applications are available at the VA’s GI Bill website, by phone at 1-888-GIBILL-1 or by speaking to the school’s VA Certifying Official usually located at the financial aid department.
Step3
If you are undecided on where you will attend school, you can still apply for your education benefits. You will complete an application and submit it to the appropriate regional VA office. If you are eligible, you’ll receive a copy of you eligibility certificate.
Step4
The Montgomery GI Bill will pay for you to take certain licensing or certification tests. A few possible examples of types of testing include: medical laboratory technician, commercial driver’s license, and water treatment specialist. To find out if your career field is covered by the Montgomery GI Bill, contact the VA by phone at 1-888-GIBILL-1.

Tips & Warnings

  • Submit a copy of your military education transcripts to receive college credit for military service.
  • Use your Montgomery GI Bill to pay for testing for vocational licensing.
